MacBook Air real-world 802.11ac speeds throttled

Following the release of the new 2013 MacBook Air, AnandTech, in looking at its Wi-Fi performance, found that even though the new systems include advanced high-speed Wi-Fi controllers, speeds are severely limited in software.
The new MacBook Air was announced by Apple at the recent Worldwide Developers Conference, and in addition to extended battery life, the new systems include support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi networking, which supports up to three times faster data rates in comparison with 802.11n.
However, there appears to be some limitation in the software currently shipping on these systems that severely limits real-world data transfer speed.
In testing, AnandTech noticed that the link speeds of the systems are very high, at an average of about 533Mbps, but when transferring files over standard networking protocols, the speed drops to about 169Mbps at its maximum. This is over three times less than the expected speeds.
In investigating the issue, AnandTech discovered that an apparent bug in OS X limits the TCP window size (the maximum data that can be sent at a time) to a maximum of 64KB, which is far less than the 256KB needed to meet the speed capabilities of the 802.11ac connection.
As a result of this finding, AnandTech shows that in its current state, while the 2013 MacBook Air will still give fast file transfers, these will be limited to about 21MBps, instead of the more than 50MBps expected. Luckily, this limitation being in software means the fix should be easy, and it may be only a matter of a quick update for these systems to realize their full potential.

Oracle Database and Oracle WebLogic

Microsoft and Oracle currently declared that they are placing their variations apart to strike a strategic partnership while in the cloud enterprise room. The offer handles both the private cloud along with the public cloud, encompassing numerous new possibilities.
For starters, Oracle will certify and assistance buyers who presently operate its computer software on Windows Server to run that same application on Home windows Server Hyper-V or in Home windows Azure. Oracle consumers also gain the benefit to operate their Oracle software package licenses in Home windows Azure “with new license mobility.”

Hyper-V and Azure help starts off right away, though the partnership does not finish there. Microsoft and Oracle have agreed to operate with each other to “add correctly accredited, and completely supported Java into Home windows Azure.”
Microsoft may also insert Infrastructure Companies scenarios with preconfigured versions of Oracle Database and Oracle WebLogic Server for patrons who don't have Oracle licenses whilst Oracle will allow clients to obtain and start Oracle Linux visuals on Home windows Azure. Facts regarding when precisely this integration might be offered weren't shared.

Oracle President Mark Hurd agreed: “I consider it just is sensible for us to continue to boost our personal abilities and also allow shoppers to leverage equally of our capabilities jointly,” he explained within the similar call. “I believe this helps make lots of sense for the two of us…because it makes a lot of feeling for our consumers.”
Oracle initial hinted at today’s information through an earnings connect with on Friday. The enterprise corporation said it had options to announce new technology partnerships with not just Microsoft, but Salesforce and Netsuite as well.

E3 Booths: Comparing Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo

When you think of how Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo appear to the public eye, you would think of how Nintendo used to be on top and how Sony was far behind it’s competition. But when you look at their respective booths at E3, you would think something complete different. I spent some time at each of their booths and I’m here to tell you how things looked like on the show floor.
First, let’s talk about Nintendo. Their booth was wide open and inviting. Their brand was splattered everywhere. Nintendo is labeling 2013 as the year of Luigi and, to celebrate, all of their presenters are required to wear Luigi hats. Every side of the booth had special photo booth sets inspired by each of their upcoming titles. You could take a picture in the Pikmin, Mario, Mario Kart, and Donkey Kong World. It was nice for attendants, but it was ultimately just a distraction.
Nothing at the Nintendo E3 booth had a long line. Well, nothing without any kind of swag had a line. The only line in Nintendo’s booth was this roulette table where you could win prizes. There was also a Mario character on a TV screen who would talk to the crowd waiting to play a 3DS game.
One huge thing Nintendo was lacking in was presenters who had any real knowledge of the games they were showing. While playing the Mario Kart 8 demo, I tried asking questions but all I got was a stock response. These stock responses didn’t feel like the usual PR responses, however. These felt like hired people who were there just to move the line – and those lines were no bigger than two people deep, for any of the games.
Microsoft’s booth was real clean. The white walls weren’t inviting, but the green insides made you feel warm and welcome. You know green means Xbox and you want to play. The whole booth was crowded at all times and everyone was lined up to see the biggest exclusive, Titanfall. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to spend much time with Microsoft at all. It just wasn’t in my cards.
Sony, however, was a party. The black walls were clashing against Microsoft’s whites. There is a console war going on and it was obvious. Sony was proud of their showing at their press conference and they weren’t afraid to show it. They had games being projected on raised walls in every direction. This was Sony’s show and they knew it.
It was black, blue, and full of people. Every single spot in the Sony booth was full. If you wanted to touch the PlayStation 4’s controller, you had to wait a long while. The shortest line for a PlayStation 4 title was for an existing pinball game – one that everyone owns on one console or another. It might have been there to show Sony’s growing partnership with indie developers. It may have been there to give a real chance for most people to actually get their hands on the new hardware.
The least crowded spot in Sony’s booth was the corner housing the rows of PS Vitas. The floor was raised with blue LED lights shining right up to you. The rows were filled with a large variety of Vita titles. The best part was each game was being shown off by people who work for that particular game’s company. If I wanted to play Dragon’s Crown, then I would have people from Atlus to talk to. If I wanted to play Ragnarok Odyssey ACE, then I would have people from XSEED there right at my side. You get the idea.
At this year’s E3, Microsoft was the most closed off. The biggest interest there was with their one huge exclusive they have coming out in the future. Sony’s booth was always full and they were showing off so much. Nintendo, on the other hand, was wide open and inviting. Even though they had a lot to show, Nintendo was the least crowded with not one of their titles being more than an hour long wait. I’d even go out of my way to say that my wait at Konami to see the new Castlevania game was longer than anything Nintendo had to offer.
Do these observations equal sales? Of course not, but public perception means most everything these days. Sony’s press conference blew Microsoft out of the water, and Nintendo didn’t really have one. And if the show has anything to do with it, Microsoft and Nintendo may be in big trouble in the future.

Screenshots of the new Xbox Tunes update demonstrate

Microsoft is tweaking many its built-in apps for Windows eight.one, though the Music application appears to incorporate essentially the most alterations. A freshly redesigned copy with the Home windows Retail outlet in leaked builds of Windows eight.1 has discovered the new person interface for Xbox Audio. Microsoft beforehand uncovered towards the Verge that buy office 2010 home and student emphasis with all the new Songs app is on playing music in excess of surfacing new content, noting you may now perform audio in two clicks rather than 6.
Screenshots of the new Xbox Tunes update demonstrate a two panel interface that appears to improve discoverability of new music along with the power to speedily obtain a set of music. Xbox Music originally launched in Oct for Windows 8 and Windows RT gadgets, while using the capability to access songs from an Xbox 360 as well. Although the provider incorporates most popular tunes and albums, the interface has often been gradual and clunky on Windows 8 and Home windows RT equipment. The up to date app plainly aims to boost that, having a "simplified design and layout" in accordance to Microsoft. You can find also a persistent in-app research box with enhanced search results, aid for tunes data files on SD playing cards, and Engage in To assist for tunes outdoors on the Xbox Songs catalogue.
Microsoft can be adding quite a few new built-in applications, including Calculator, Audio Recorder, Scan, Looking through Listing, Film Moments, and Assistance & Tips. Film Moments allows you to edit videos from a touch-friendly interface, and Looking at Checklist acts as a super clipboard to store URLs and other snippets from applications. The Seem Recorder, Calculator, and Scan apps are all simplified touch-friendly versions to replace the legacy desktop variants. Enable & Tips will contain quite a few tutorials for new Home windows 8.1 users that should enhance some from the associated confusion with all the new interface.

Alongside the Xbox Songs redesign and additional applications, the brand new Home windows Keep interface has also been spotted in Home windows 8.1 builds. Microsoft appears to be altering the style and design of its Shop, alongside improvements for the top paid and top free sections, new releases, and a "picks for you" section that suggests applications based on an existing library. Similar apps are also suggested within application pages, having a general focus on app discoverability. The new Home windows Retailer also works well in portrait mode, designed for upcoming 7- and 8-inch tablets. All the improvements will be made available in Windows eight.one, an update that Microsoft will release as a preview version on June 26th alongside its Build developer conference.

Koss' FitClip Headphones for Women Aren't Pink or Patronizing

Consumer electronics designed specifically for women -- it's long been a category marked by unsuccessful products.
Back in 2008 Dell launched its Della campaign, which marketed pink and red laptops to women. Then there was the HTC Rhyme Android smartphone, which came only in a purple hue and with a purse charm. Most recently there was the ePad Femme, a pink-colored Android tablet designed for women.
But headphone maker Koss might have finally cracked the gadget-for-women challenge -- it has done more than just change the color on its new headphones for women. The Wisconsin-based company has teamed up with Olympic swimmer Dara Torres to create the FitClips, a pair of fitness earbuds that say right on the box they've been "designed for women by women."
"Every once in a while I would hear from women that their headphones didn't fit," Koss President and CEO Michael J. Koss told ABC News. "For the most part, women are generally smaller than men and they have smaller ears. We thought it would be a good idea to take a look at designing earbuds with that in mind."
Koss was connected with Torres through mutal friends and together they teamed up to solve the problem of fit for female ears, without sacrificing function or quality. The $30 earbuds have been designed with smaller buds and with a more comfortable and malleable clip, but not at the expense of the audio quality.
"Sound was very important. When you reduce the size of the earbud, you reduce the quality of the sound," Torres told ABC News in a joint interview with Koss. "They had to work hard to figure out how to make a small bud and get it so the sound quality was as good as the other earbuds out there."
Torres also made something else very clear: these are not like other celebrity earbuds. Sure, everyone from Snooki to Tim Tebow has their name on the designer audio equipment, but the 12-time Olympic medalist was very involved in the design and product development and refused to just change the design and color of the earbuds.
"Making a product for women by just changing a color or something isn't really making a product for women," she said. "They sent me prototypes and I would tell them what I liked and what I didn't like and gave feedback on comfort. It wasn't just some guys putting some headphones together -- they were really designed by women."
The earbuds come in five colors, ranging from a coral to blue to a mint green.
Other earbuds have been made for women in the past, but not by such a big name. Yurbuds makes a pair of earbuds that were "inspired for women." They, too. are designed for smaller ears.
Torres' photo is front and center on the box, as is the phrase "designed for women by women." And while it is usually very easy to find female critics of women-aimed-gadgets, experts say Koss has gone about the FitClips in a very smart way.
"While these are colorful, they aren't pink and there are a lot of options," Karena Cameron of Femme Den, a design lab focused on the female consumer, told ABC News. "And they really considered the context -- they are calling out the audio quality isn't being compromised."
Femme Den is a group within the Smart Design agency.

Faucet the Home windows essential and start typing

It has been about a 12 months considering the fact that I first set up a create of Home windows 8 on the take a look at machine. Because then, I have operate it over a big selection of hardware, like slate-format tablets, hybrid touch/pen/keyboard pill PCs, classic laptops and multi-monitor desktop PCs ¨C components that mixes the previous (with Vista and XP-era devices) and also the new (a recently upgraded Core i5 desktop method). It has been on Intel processors, on AMD, on physical, on virtual: on quite a great deal just about every machine I could obtain while in the office environment.
Tests and benchmarking is all really very well, however, you only genuinely get to know an OS by living with it, employing it each day to complete each day duties on the every day Personal computer. For me, meaning the great old-fashioned desktop Pc.
Nearly all of my time is spent in front of a multi-monitor desktop equipment, particularly the configuration that lots of folks have worried about in feedback to various Windows eight posts. When desktop users could shortly be within the minority, you'll find continue to a good amount of us all over. I depend on applications like Office environment and Adobe Lightroom and they depend on the desktop ¨C and that?ˉs not likely to vary till the tools transform. So for my desktop Personal computer, there?ˉs little or no transform concerning 7 and 8 while in the way I work.
Something I?ˉve recognized from the months considering that Home windows eight reached RTM, its evolution hasn?ˉt ended ¨C and it?ˉs however recovering. When i upgraded my desktop from Windows 7 to eight just right after RTM it absolutely was to all extents and reasons only a somewhat a lot quicker Home windows 7 machine with a new UI. But together with the new 160MB post-RTM update, and along with the arrival of some new unit drivers plus a pair of new pieces of components, it?ˉs turning into a little something somewhat distinctive.
The one particular huge adjust, naturally, is definitely the Start Display screen. As changes go, it?ˉs a massive a person, but it?ˉs not the showstopper that some have built it out to generally be. I?ˉve ended up treating it as a entire display screen model on the old Start off menu, and use it in a great deal a similar way. Much like the get started menu, the start Display winds up full of apps I?ˉve mounted, and that i sometimes tidy it up. There was a little bit operate in getting it the way in which I preferred to start out with, but yet again, starting up with a fresh set up of Windows XP or 7 I?ˉd be carrying out significantly the same detail ¨C grouping programs and eliminating references to functions or applications I don?ˉt intend to use.

Launching apps is simple adequate. Faucet the Home windows essential and start typing, when the word wheel filter demonstrates your application, just choose and click on ¨C or hit return. You?ˉre instantly back again to the desktop and in the application you should use. That?ˉs all there may be to it, and when you utilized Vista or 7?ˉs research box as your primary technique of navigation you?ˉll find the Start out Screen slightly much more economical as you don?ˉt should click on while in the search box to begin acquiring applications or data files.
The arrival of the new Microsoft Sculpt Ease and comfort keyboard made some functions even less complicated. Even though Home windows 8?ˉs Charms are only a mouse gesture absent, acquiring them to the keyboard is far easier. 4 individual Attraction keys suggest you may get to go looking, Share, Gadgets and Configurations without needing to go your fingers away within the keyboard. If you?ˉre utilizing a Home windows 8 Store-style application, the keyboard also comes with 4 keys that replicate the leading Home windows eight contact gestures. A person handles a remaining swipe software switch, while an additional toggles the Snap view to the operating software. One other two launch the start Display undertaking switcher and open up the application bar.

Sea change in Microsoft's focus may force restructure of leadership

Microsoft reportedly is headed for a major organizational restructuring as the company continues its march toward becoming a devices-and-services company.
If the latest rumors are any indication, Microsoft will focus on at least three major categories in the coming years: cloud-connected services, online communications, and all things Xbox.
AllThingsD reported on Monday that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is hard at work on a significant reorganization for the company that will boost at least three execs into “more prominent roles.” The reorganization report comes on the heels of the news that Microsoft CIO Tony Scott has left the company.
Ballmer last October famously said in his annual letter to shareholders that Microsoft was transitioning from a traditional software company into a devices-and-services business. “This is a significant shift, both in what we do and how we see ourselves—as a devices-and-services company,” Ballmer wrote. “It impacts how we run the company, how we develop new experiences, and how we take products to market for both consumers and businesses.”
  Three pillars
The three Microsoft executives supposedly headed for bigger roles in the company include Satya Nadella, president of Microsoft’s Servers and Tools division; Tony Bates, president of Skype; and Don Mattrick, who heads the company’s Interactive Entertainment division.
The Servers and Tools division includes a lot of enterprise products such as Windows Azure, the backbone for Microsoft’s online services.
If Microsoft is headed toward becoming a devices-and-services company, then it makes sense to give a more prominent position to the person responsible for making sure most of the company's online services run smoothly.
Microsoft purchased Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion and has since been hard at work integrating Skype into Office, Windows 8, Windows Phone, Outlook.com, and the upcoming Xbox One. It’s pretty clear that Skype is a big part of Microsoft’s devices-and-services future. But whether Bates would continue to head Skype or would move on to another role is unclear.
Finally, we come to Interactive Entertainment, the division responsible for the Xbox. Microsoft, over time, has turned the Xbox 360 into a living-room device that does more than just play games. It also lets the user stream movies, browse the web and do social networking.
The upcoming Xbox One will employ a similar strategy, adding all the features of the Xbox 360 as well as new features, such as integrating with your cable box to provide an overlay for your digital TV guide.
Microsoft appears to have a good shot at turning the Xbox into the all-encompassing living-room device that company rivals like Apple and Google also are trying to create.
The mythical perfect living-room box hopefully would offer gaming, DVR recording, a digital TV guide, online streaming from services like Amazon and Netflix, as well as integration with your PCs, smartphones, and tablets, and a wealth of TV-centric apps. The Xbox One has almost all of these features, minus the DVR, which may be added at a later date.
While Microsoft appears to be planning for a future where Xbox plays a major role, some analysts are calling for the company to sell off its gaming platform/set-top box. Recently, Nomura Equity Research analyst Rick Sherlund called for Microsoft to sell Xbox and Bing .
  Where are the devices?
But in Microsoft’s purported Azure-Skype-Xbox future, where do devices like the Surface come in?
Even though Windows is struggling to gain popularity among users, Microsoft’s Surface is far and above the most popular Windows tablet there is. Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets made up half of all Windows slate sales during the first three months of the year, according to IDC (full disclosure: PCWorld and IDC are both owned by International Data Group).
Those sales also catapulted Microsoft into fifth place among the top tablet vendors worldwide.

Laptop gross sales dropped by 14 p.c

Even though Internet Apps refers to its month to month numbers as “market share studies,” they actually signify usage share, which is not similar to market share. Industry share steps product sales and/or shipments within a given time period. It’s a snapshot in the purchasing alternatives people today make in competitive markets.
Use share steps the habits in the put in base. Within the mature Computer system sector, which is made up of approximately 1.5 billion desktop and portable PCs, newcomers have an uphill struggle to even get about the board. Measuring utilization share gives an indirect evaluate of profits, nonetheless it requires operate to tease out the larger developments.
Home windows eight is little by little but steadily growing its share of usage around the globe. In Might, according to the NetMarketShare data, Windows 8 use elevated from three.eight % to four.3 percent. That speed has remained about the similar since February, the primary total thirty day period immediately after Microsoft’s discounted up grade offer ended. Considering the fact that then, NetMarketShare claims Windows eight usage has greater by an average of about 0.five per cent every month.
Home windows seven development stopped over a dime along with the launch of Home windows eight. In Oct 2012, Home windows seven use was at forty four.seven p.c. In May possibly, 7 months later, it is up an inconsequential quantity, to forty four.8 per cent. Before this year I known as Windows 7 the “Long-Term Assist model of Windows.” I predict it'll stay popular, specifically in enterprises, for several years to return.
Home windows Vista and Home windows XP are declining little by little. Collectively, these two variations shared about forty six.5 p.c of your throughout the world utilization share in October of last yr, before Windows 8 introduced. Seven months later, they characterize 42.two p.c. That provides as much as a four.three p.c fall, which just transpires to match the share of Windows eight perfectly.
Windows consumers are not deserting the platform for OS X and Linux. Last Oct, OS X and Linux utilization additional as many as 8.three per cent. Seven months right after the launch of Home windows 8, the put together share hasn't budged and is particularly still at eight.three percent.
Desktop browser usage shares (which aren’t as carefully tied to new Personal computer purchases) have also remained mainly unchanged in the latest months. For May perhaps, NetMarketShare studies that Internet Explorer held a 56 percent share, as opposed to 20.6 p.c for Firefox and 15.7 per cent for Chrome. When compared to final October, which is a slight beneficial change for World wide web Explorer, which was at 54.1 per cent, and for Firefox, which elevated from a fair 20 %. NetMarketShare experiences a noticeable fall in worldwide utilization for Chrome, which had been at 18.6 percent.
Are this month’s figures excellent news or bad news for Microsoft? Neither, definitely. The first bump from early adopters and fans occurred while in the first 3 months right after the start of Home windows 8, when Microsoft offered a dramatically discounted improve to Home windows 8 Pro.
Almost every person who intended to update to Windows eight has previously done so. That leaves the substitute Personal computer industry. Around 650 million people today who have Home windows 7 PCs that are a few a long time aged or more recent haven't any strategies to alter their hardware or software any time before long. Those who are replacing older PCs are, in general, purchasing new equipment with Windows 8 preinstalled, although they are grumbling a tad greater than standard.
Heading ahead, the destiny of Windows eight is tied to sales of recent components, which include the two traditional PCs and new cellular products like tablets, hybrids, and Ultrabooks.
The standard Personal computer industry is, to put it mildly, not carrying out nicely. Inside the first quarter of this calendar year, Laptop gross sales dropped by 14 p.c when compared on the similar period of time previous yr. Folks are still getting PCs, but they are keeping on to them extended and progressively picking smartphones, tablets, and other cell gadgets to manage computing responsibilities they made use of to accomplish with all the Pc.
Microsoft developed Windows eight in order that it could ability those people nontraditional mobile devices, calculating that it could make up with the decline in conventional Computer system product sales with shipments of recent Windows 8-powered gadgets from the pill classification. But touch-enabled Home windows laptops and tablets are just beginning to appear on the market, and they nevertheless make up less than 30 per cent of Windows PCs around the sector.
All that could transform later on this calendar year. The following wave of Windows 8 equipment will likely be manufactured up of lesser tablets such as Acer Iconia W3-810, which sports an 8.1-inch display screen. Windows eight was intended with 10-inch screens in mind, with a potent bias in favor of landscape orientation. Home windows eight.1 particularly supports decreased resolutions and alternate aspect ratios. It also makes other changes into the behavior of apps that ought to ensure it is a great range for all those mini-tablets.
If all those gadgets are priced right, they may become a significant good results. From the meantime, very little is likely to change future month, or maybe the month just after that.
